Jefferson Parish has issued mandatory mask-wearing proclamation for those visiting parish businesses as state case counts continue to rise at a concerning rate.
Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng says their proclamation takes effect Wednesday and is the only way the parish will be able to one day move into Phase Three.
“The best tool to reduce the transmission of this virus is for everyone to wear masks, especially so indoors,” says Sheng.
Sheng says violators could be charged up to 500 dollars.
The Jefferson Parish ordinance requires workers at businesses to wear face masks while in all common areas. Sheng explains how that might look.
“When you come in you have to wear a mask, when you walk into the hallway, the restroom, the elevator, when you get into your office suite, maybe you sit in a cubicle you are spaced out enough, you are six feet away from other people, you can take your mask off,” says Sheng.
New Orleans already requires mask wearing in buisinesses, but appears to be ready to increase enforcement. Mayor Latoya Cantrell says they’re serious, and called out one business in particular.
“Walmart in New Orleans East, they know, they’ve heard from me, unacceptable. I have asked that if they cannot get it together they will have to close that store unfortunately,” says Cantrell.
