Another Louisiana staple announces a cancellation, The 2020 World Championship Gumbo Cookoff in New Iberia is the largest tourism event for the parish and Greater Iberia Chamber of Commerce CEO Janet Faulk-Gonzales says the annual October event is a large undertaking and they waited as long as possible to make a decision about the event.
“So, we felt like we just couldn’t wait any longer to hold out for the possibility for an on-site event this year,” says Faulk-Gonzales
Instead, they are entertaining virtual options. Faulk-Gonzales admits it is hard to conceptualize a virtual food event, but in planning for alternatives this year she’s heard some creative ideas.
“Our thought is instead of the world coming to Iberia Parish we’re taking gumbo to the world, so we’re kind of excited about that,” says Faulk-Gonzales.
Because more people are cooking at home due to the pandemic Faulk-Gonzales hopes they will look to the 2020 Virtual Gumbo Event for guidance.
“I think there will be a lot of people who will be interested in learning to cook and to talk to some of the professionals and amateurs around this area that do the best gumbo in the world,” says Faulk-Gonzales.
