SEC athletic directors have reportedly approved a ten-game conference-only schedule for football this year due to the pandemic. But the proposal still needs approval from university presidents, who will meet today, but they might delay their vote to next week. LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron says if the schedule changes they will be ready.
“We are not going to blink and we are not going to change our mindset, if they move it back, if they change it, who cares, it doesn’t matter, you call us at midnight and we are going to play in a pasture,” said Orgeron.
Orgeron made a virtual appearance before the Baton Rouge Rotary Club and talked about how his team has been preparing for the season while trying to avoid a coronavirus outbreak.
“We had a little spike and then we came back down, I think we have two guys right now that have the COVID, we feel we have done very well, when we are practicing we are practicing with masks on, the coaches have masks in the office, I think we’ve handled it about as well as anyone in the country,” said Orgeron.
So if there is a ten-game conference only schedule who will LSU play. The Tigers would play the six other teams in the SEC West, but their permanent cross over opponent Florida. LSU is also set to host South Carolina. So the two additional SEC games for LSU would be against Kentucky and Tennessee. Based on future SEC schedules, the Tigers were set to play the Wildcats in 2021 and the Volunteers in 2022.
The ACC has approved a 10-game conference only schedule and also giving schools the option of playing one non-conference game in their home state. The SEC could also approve a similar schedule.
