A preseason coaches poll ranks LSU fifth even though the Tigers are the current National Champs. The USA Today Amway Coaches poll ranked Clemson at the top for the second year in a row followed by Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia then LSU. While the Tiger faithful might be shocked with the ranking, USA Today Sportswriter Glenn Guilbeau says there are valid reasons for fifth place.
“You know you lose a guy like Joe Burrow, you’re gonna drop, particularly you know because he’s the quarterback and he was such a great quarterback. You also lost your passing game coordinator Joe Brady,” says Guilbeau.
Guilbeau credits Clemson’s high ranking due to a returning quarterback. But also points out that LSU fans should not be upset whatsoever.
“So that means they are a National Championship contender, and that’s because they returned an excellent team with a question mark at quarterback,” says Guilbeau.
With many looking forward to the return of college football during a year that has been anything but normal, Guilbeau says news of the ranking might sting a bit more than usual for fans of the purple and gold.
“Fanatics, ha, they don’t always think clearly particularly this time of year as the season’s getting closer, you know they may feel like they’ve been slighted,” says Guilbeau.
Six SEC teams made the top 25 for the Coaches preseason poll, including Florida (8), Auburn (11), and Texas A & M (13).
