Virtual meetings may have become part of the new normal during the pandemic, but a new study from career website Zippia shows that most people are distracted during the meetings. Head of content at Zippia Kathy Morris says in Louisiana the number one distraction is multitasking.
“While a lot of workers are using this time to maybe eat a sandwich or text a friend, most people are just trying to find a way to make their meetings a little bit more productive by doing some actual work,” said Morris.
Morris says 20% of workers say their meetings are never productive and 47% of workers prefer in-person meetings over the frustrations that come with virtual gatherings.
“The number one frustration is people who feel that the meeting could have been an email. It just isn’t worth everyone logging on and getting together. Other things definitely go back to the tech issues, the loud background noises, technical difficulties,” said Morris.
Morris says another factor that may contribute to the distractions and disdain for meetings the amount of time they take away from actual work.
“The average American worker has 2 to 3 hours of meetings a week, which may not seem like a huge number, but when you are trying to get your work done and you have tight deadlines, it can be a lot,” said Morris.
