Residents of Westlake, Moss Bluff, and Sulphur in Calcasieu Parish are being instructed to stay inside due to a chemical fire at the BioLab plant. The fire has sent thick smoke into the air that contains poisonous chlorine. Trooper Derek Senegal says hazmat teams are on the scene tending to the situation.
“They are also trying to figure out if there is any other chemicals within the fire or within this area where the fire is smoldering right now. They can’t just throw water on any type of chemical because there is a potential of it reigniting,” said Senegal.
Senegal says residents need to stay indoors with doors and windows closed and the AC off.
“No estimated time of when everything is going to be clear. Right now, we do have Interstate 10 east and westbound lanes closed at this time as a precaution,” said Senegal.
According to the CDC, exposure to chlorine may cause burning pain, blurred visions, and difficulty breathing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
🚨 If you are in the Westlake/Moss Bluff/Sulphur area, shelter in place, close your windows and doors and TURN OFF YOUR AIR CONDITIONING UNITS. There is a chemical fire. Stay inside and wait for additional direction from local officials. 🚨
