A hurricane warning is in effect for southwest Louisiana and into central Louisiana, as Delta is on track to make landfall Friday afternoon as a Category Two storm.
State Climatologist Barry Keim said the most likely point of impact right now appears to be the Cameron-Vermillion Parish area as the track has been shifting west after initially predicting a landfall in southeast Louisiana.
Keim said Delta is currently forecasted to bring about five to ten inches of rain for southwest and south-central Louisiana.
“That certainly could create some flooding issues but this is nothing like Hurricane Harvey proportions or anything like that,” said Keim.
The National Hurricane Center storm surge forecast calls for seven to eleven feet of surge from Pecan Island to Port Fourchon, and four feet of surge elsewhere along the coast.
Keim said Delta’s biggest threat at the moment appears to be its potential to bring some heavy wind damage deep inland.
“The National Hurricane Center is calling for Delta to be at tropical storm strength in Alexandria as it moves northeast across the state,” said Keim.
