The Senate Judiciary Committee begins hearings Monday on the nomination of Metairie native and Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court. Louisiana Senator John Kennedy sits on the panel and expects Democrats will obstruct and get personal.
“They have called her every name in the book,” said Kennedy. “They’ve called her racist, they’ve called her a colonialist, they’ve called her a religious bigot, and before it is over they will call her Rosemary’s baby.”
Democrats say the hearings should wait until after voters make their voice heard in November. Kennedy says the Senate has every constitutional right to proceed.
Dems have also argued the proceedings should wait in light of the COVID super-spreading event in the Rose Garden that exposed dozens of prominent Republicans to the virus. Kennedy disagrees.
“If you don’t’ want to attend in person then you can appear through the internet. My Democratic friends have been doing that for the last six months,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy says he’s impressed with Barrett’s education, work as a law professor, and her three years as a Federal 7th Circuit Appellate Judge.
“She is a legal rock star and I like what I see,” said Kennedy. “I’ve already voted for her once when she was confirmed three years ago to be on the 7th Circuit.”
