There are seven constitutional amendments on the November 3rd ballot and Amendment one asks voters if they support an amendment that the right to an abortion and the funding of abortion shall not be found in the Louisiana Constitution.
“What Amendment would do is place into the Constitution, the statement that the Constitution does not protect the right to abortion, the constitution doesn’t protect the funding of abortion,” said Robert Travis Scott, president of the Public Affairs Research Council.
State lawmakers approved Amendment One during the 2019 regular session and waited until the upcoming November election for the question to be placed on the ballot.
Scott says proponents of the Amendment want to eliminate any loopholes that would allow women the choice to terminate their pregnancy.
“Even if we’ve outlawed abortion in statute, wanted to make sure no one can come back and say our Louisiana constitution actually allows the right to an abortion,” said Scott.
Scott says until Roe V Wade is overturned, Amendment 1, does not change anything immediately, however.
“The fact that is no right to require the funding of abortion could potentially have some effect,” said Scott.
