U-S Air Force C-130 planes are being used to spray for mosquitos in parishes impacted by Hurricanes Laura and Delta. Mike Steele with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says FEMA approved the use of the planes because of the booming mosquito population.
“The local spraying efforts weren’t adequate enough to handle the problems they are going to be seeing with some of the mosquitoes in the area,” said Steele.
Steele says the spraying will be conducted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for the next six days over Acadia, Calcasieu, Cameron, Iberia Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, and Vermilion parishes.
“Some of the experts have determined that it’s the best window to conduct these types of missions, so we want to make sure that the chemicals and the flights are being used in a time that’s most effective.”
Why is it important to spray these areas now? Steele says that the rainfall from the two hurricanes could be a hot spot for mosquitoes.
“There’s larva that lay dormant several days after a hurricane so that window for them to hatch is right now, so it’s important to start spraying now.”
