Republican Bill Cassidy is seeking a second six-year term in the U-S Senate on the Tuesday ballot and faces 14 challengers headlined by Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins, a black Democrat. Cassidy says if given another term he’ll focus on reducing healthcare costs, improving the VA, and passing a substantial infrastructure package that would spur construction.
“Do something about the I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu River, we need a new Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge, an I-49 north and I-49 south, a flyway to that beautiful airport in Kenner, Louisiana,” said Cassidy.
But Perkins, an Army Veteran, says Louisianans need a leader in D.C. who will focus on COVID-related issues like reinstating federal unemployment benefits and winning aid for struggling local governments.
“My leadership experience comes from the time I was 23-years-old, leading combat patrols in Iraq and I got way more leadership experiences in my eight-year military career,” said Perkins.
Perkins, a Harvard grad, became the youngest mayor in Shreveport history when he won in 2018. It was also his first foray into politics.
The Democrat has hammered Cassidy for his vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act early in the Trump presidency.
“We need to make sure we keep the Affordable Care Act,” said Perkins. “Senator Cassidy tried to repeal it and replace it with a disastrous plan that would have stripped health care from more than a half-million Americans.”
Cassidy, a doctor, doesn’t regret his vote for repealing what he calls the “Unaffordable Care Act”. He says middle-class families can’t pay Obamacare premiums, but even so, he’s worked to fix that…
“Working with President Trump, we’ve actually lowered the cost of premiums under Obamacare, they are now 8% lower this year than they were last year,” said Cassidy.
Limited polling show Perkins as the top Democrat in the race with Baton Rouge activist Antoine Pierce in 3rd. A potential run-off would be held on December 5th if no candidate wins over 50%.
