Complete domination! That’s how you sum up what the Saint did to the Buccaneers Sunday night in Tampa Bay as New Orleans started fast and never looked back in a 38-3 victory that puts the Black and Gold in first place in the NFC South.
Quarterback Drew Brees didn’t connect on a lot of big passing plays, but he still had a fantastic night as he was 26-of-32 for 222 yards and four touchdowns. Twelve different players caught a pass. Nine different receivers caught a pass in the first quarter as the Saints raced out to 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Michael Thomas had five catches for 51 yards in his first game since the season opener.
Emmanuel Sanders, Josh Hill, Tre’Quan Smith and Adam Trautman all had touchdown receptions.
Taysom Hill led the Saints in rushing with seven carries for 54 yards. He was also two-for-two as a passer for 48 yards.
Meanwhile, Bucs QB Tom Brady struggled. Brady threw three interceptions and he was sacked three times. Trey Hendrickson had two sacks. Tampa Bay started with four straight three and outs as the Black and Gold’s secondary was locked in.
TB’s passer rating of 40.4 is the third lowest in his career for a game and it’s the first time he’s been swept by a division opponent in his 19-year Hall of Fame career. The 35-point defeat was also the worst in Brady’s career that’s lasted 335 games.
Tampa Bay only rushed for eight yards as Leonard Fournette had just one rush for zero yards.
Mike Evans had four catches for 64 yards and new Buccaneer Antonio Brown was a non-factor as he had three catches for 31 yards.
The Black and Gold’s defense, which has struggled in the red zone, came up with a goal line stand, stopping the Buccaneers four times from the one-yard line, after the Saints had a turnover early in the second half.
The victory improves the Saints record to 6-2, while the Bucs fall 6-3. With New Orleans owning two victories over Tampa Bay, it puts the Black and Gold in firm control of the NFC South.
The Saints are also tied with Green Bay and Seattle for the best record in the NFC.
