Governor John Bel Edwards, November 16, 2020.
It was a year ago today that Governor John Bel Edwards was re-elected to a second term after a runoff with Republican Baton Rouge businessman Eddie Rispone. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat said Edwards has faced numerous challenges in the first year of his second term.
“We had COVID-19 starting March, which shut down the economy, nursing homes; hospitals flooded with patients, a lot of deaths related to COVID-19 and then along comes hurricane season,” said Pinsonat.
Pinsonat said Edwards’s military training and ability to learn from past governors’ mistakes allows him to present himself on camera well and reassure Louisianans during the pandemic and record-breaking hurricane season.
“He’s been through disaster after disaster, but he’s come out literally unscathed as far as his popularity,” said Pinsonat.
Another challenge the democratic Governor has faced in his second term is more republicans in the legislature. Pinsonat says outside the capitol Edwards is faring well, however inside its monumental challenge.
“His inability to control the legislature hasn’t affected him because he’s got Federal dollars to keep the state economy afloat,” said Pinsonat.
