State and Federal officials have indicated there will be a substantial public education campaign accompanying the rollout of vaccines to convince folks that they are safe to take.
US Department of Health Assistant Secretary Admiral Brett Giroir said the campaign will explain in detail why officials trust that the vaccines are safe.
“Tens of thousands of individuals have received these vaccines and there have been follow-ups for efficacy and safety,” said Giroir.
Pfizer and Moderna will be the first vaccines out the gate, likely followed by AstraZeneca.
Some are concerned corners were cut in order to produce the vaccine in such record time. Giroir said that’s not true and officials will detail how this vaccine was created so quickly.
“We have been very clear that we are expediting things as fast as possible, but not more than possible,” said Giroir.
Reports and polls indicate many minorities are less likely to take the vaccine due to a mistrust of the medical community. Governor Edwards said they will be tailoring outreach designed to alleviate those fears.
“They need to know that it has been tested in people that look like them, and that it has been found to be effective and safe, and then you have to have people who look like them spreading that message as well,” said Edwards.
