LSU Football Coach Ed Orgeron confirmed today that star freshman Tight End Arik Gilbert has opted out for the remainder of the season. Orgeron says he met with Gilbert yesterday.
“He told me he was transferring, he said his body was hurting and he had some things he needed to take care of. Do I think there’s a chance of getting him back next season? Yeah. Is there a chance of him transferring? I don’t know that, he hasn’t told me he was transferring.”
While Gilbert has not announced any plans to transfer, Orgeron says LSU will re-recruit him to get him back next season.
“Obviously we’re going to re-recruit him and obviously we wish him the best, he can take care of the things he needs to take care of and we’d like him back next year.”
With all of the opt-outs in college football this season, the mental health of athletes has been in the spotlight, and Orgeron says the school does a great job addressing mental health issues.
“We have a great mental health program, we have counselors available, we’re constantly watching our guys for any sign of mental health depression, whatever they may go through.”
