A four-year-old was killed in a New Iberia house fire early Monday morning.
State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue said the cause of the fire is still under investigation but so far they’ve got two theories as to what caused the tragedy.
“One of which was the family had reported having some electrical issues, as recently as the night before, in addition, there was the use of some candles around the home overnight, which may have contributed,” said Rodrigue.
Rodrigue said no smoke alarms were found on the premises and the only reason other members of the household survived was because one of them woke up to the smell of smoke.
“The issue was that in the chaos, of course as understandable as it would be, in a situation like this, this four-year-old had been in the hands of someone and then got away,” said Rodrigue.
Rodrigue said in situations like a house fire it is common for children to get scared and try to hide, that’s why it’s important that every family establish a house fire plan of action.
“Teach everyone two different ways out of every room, and teach them the way to get through a home when it is dark because when there is smoke you cannot see,” said Rodrigue.
