Former Governor Edwin Edwards is back home after a routine exam over the weekend at LSU Health-Shreveport. Edwards Biographer Leo Honeycutt said Edwards took a private jet on Saturday for a checkup and is back home now.
“Because he’d been there two years ago for a complete study, a group testing that was administered by Dr. Ghali, who’s the Dean of the LSU Medical Center up in Shreveport. So, he went back for that same battery of tests,” said Honeycutt.
Honeycutt said Edwards was also given a COVID test because he was at a healthcare facility and tested negative.
Honeycutt said the 93-year-old former governor routinely gets pneumonia in the fall but was recently hospitalized twice in Baton Rouge.
“And this time he beat double-pneumonia with no complications from COVID, so I think that did prompt maybe a move up during the holidays of his testing, but he was scheduled to go back in for the series tests anyway,” said Honeycutt.
Despite his age and recent bouts of pneumonia, Honeycutt is amazed at Edwards’s resilience and believes he is a living testament that laughter really is the best medicine.
“So, he jokes all the time and he has a very good sense of humor, and a very good outlook and I think that’s the reason why he’s lived to 93 and had kept all his faculties,” said Honeycutt.
Edwards served four terms as Louisiana’s governor.
