Baton Rouge Republican Congressman Garret Graves does not support the House Democrats’ attempt to impeach President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection.”
Graves said the President’s actions before the riot were wrong, but impeachment would further divide a divided country.
“We are ripping this nation apart right now,” said Graves. “I’m not, I’m not going to sit here and sit on the sidelines and let this happen and leave a destroyed nation to our children and grandchildren.”
Graves called on the President to effectively resign after the day of violence on Capitol Hill last week, and for the President to find a way to turn over Presidential powers to Vice President Mike Pence.
Graves also noted the Senate indicated it would not be able to hold an impeachment trial until the day Trump is set to leave the Oval Office, but regardless Democrats are expected to vote to impeach the President Wednesday. Graves said they have not followed tradition.
“You always have hearings and other things before you do impeachment and this is, unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi saying shoot now we will aim later,” said Graves who called for a full investigation of how the Capitol was stormed to be conducted before any further action is taken.
Graves says impeachment is pointless because the President is no threat to incite further violence and that since the January 6th storming of the Capitol Trump has laid low.
“He has not been out there saying all of these inflammatory things,” said Graves. “He needs to continue to keep a low profile, go do a victory tour, but do not get out there and exercise the full authority of the microphone and megaphone.”
