Northwest Louisiana is getting hammered by a combination of frigid temperatures and a messy mix of sleet and snow.
Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins announced much of the city could be without water for the next 48 hours. Caddo Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Cindy Chadwick said the storm has damaged water mains and workers are pushing to get them back up and running.
City and parish roads have been declared “unpassable” which means they are drivable but dangerous. Chadwick said thankfully residents are playing it safe.
“People have been I think heading the warning and are staying off the roadways even though only the interstates are closed at this point,” said Chadwick.
Chadwick asked motorists to try and avoid driving into or through northwest Louisiana at this time. She says successfully navigating the area is a coin flip.
“Depending on the tread on your tires and the kinds of traction that you can get you may or may not be able to get up hills and over bridges so if you come this way you may or may not be able to complete your travel,” said Chadwick.
Power outages are also growing across the region and Chadwick said there are concerns the numbers could grow even faster the longer this weather event goes on.
