State Police says I-20 is a solid block of ice and it’s resulted in jack-knifed 18-wheelers and several vehicles sliding off the highway. Trooper Brent Hardy says thankfully no serious injuries have been reported.
“A lot of these people are just off of the roadway, they run off and they don’t hit anything, but whenever they travel, even off the roadway, conditions off the roadway are worse than what it is on the roadway,” said Hardy.
Hardy says the two winter storms have produced a four to a five-inch block of ice and even Troopers who train to drive in these conditions are struggling.
“So the public who doesn’t have that same kind of training, they really, really need to stay off the roadway and especially if don’t have a four-wheel-drive we are asking you to please stay off,” said Hardy.
Hardy says many of the motorists that have been stranded after sliding off the road, said they were driving around to look at winter scenery.
“That is a very, very bad idea, not only do you put yourself in jeopardy, but you also put all of the first responders that have to come to that location in jeopardy,” said Hardy.
