On Monday COVID vaccine eligibility will increase by another 475,000 thousand. The historic winter storms delayed COVID vaccine shipments across the state. But Governor Edwards said with an increase in weekly allocations he’s comfortable in allowing more to be vaccinated.
“We again are going to ask people to schedule those appointments, be patience and understand that the providers are having to juggle a number of balls all at one time in the air as they try to catch up from the doses, they were unable to administer this week,” said Edwards.
Beginning Monday, those ages 55 to 64 with certain health conditions will be eligible for vaccinations, along with K-12 teachers and school support staff, day care staff and pregnant women.
Edwards said it has been the goal all along to allow more people to get vaccinated as soon as the doses are available.
“Well, we’re going to have more doses to administer next week than we’ve ever had before and so from that perspective it is exactly the right time to add in individuals from the next priority group,” said Edwards.
Edwards said with the winter storms causing delays in vaccine deliveries and administering doses, he’s urging those seeking to be vaccinated to be patient.
“Is it going to be as smooth as it would have been had we not had this winter weather storm this week, probably not,” said Edwards.
