The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the homicide of a 77-year-old caretaker and the suspect is the special needs woman she cared for at a home in Terrytown. Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said the incident happened Friday morning
“It appears that the suspect, in this case, is going to be a 32-year-old special needs female that also resides here in this residence that probably committed a homicide upon her sitter,” said Lopinto.
Lopinto said the suspect, who is nonverbal, has been taken to a psychiatric ward. He said the victim, did not live at the residence and is not related to the suspect. She has been identified as Barbara Bridges of Harvey.
“These situations are difficult because we know what happened, it’s not something where we’re trying to figure it out. We know who did it at this point and time. I don’t know if we’ll ever know why,” said Lopinto.
Investigators believe the two women had an argument which then led to a physical altercation. Lopinto says they believe the cause of death is most likely blunt force trauma.
“Don’t believe it’s firearms, believe it’s going to be a physical type of fight that occurred. But I’ll let the coroner’s office obviously do their autopsy to see what happened,” said Lopinto.
Lopinto said it was a family member of the suspect that discovered the body.
