The weekend may be in the rearview mirror, but the celebration of Mardi Gras continues. Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said there are many ways to celebrate in each part of the state. It’s not always all about catching cheap plastic beads.
“From throwing hotdogs up in Shreveport, to chasing chickens in Mamou, it’s a little different in every area of the state. And you do have great celebrations, family-friendly Mardi Gras in every corner of the state,” said Nungesser.
Nungesser said while the President may pardon a turkey each Thanksgiving, Louisiana has its own spin on that tradition during Mardi Gras with crawfish.
“We take one crawfish, one lucky crawfish, and we pardon it and let it go in a state park while the rest of his family gets boiled alive as we kick off crawfish season,” said Nungesser.
Nungesser said you may stumble upon some unique throws at different celebrations around the state.
“Everybody’s got to catch a coconut from Zulu, and you’ve got everything from toilet plungers, to hotdogs, to shoes that are thrown. It’s just ‘what can we think of next?'” said Nungesser.
