A Letlow will represent Louisiana’s 5th congressional district. Julia Letlow of Richland Parish won the special 5th district congressional race without the need of the run-off as she received 65 percent of the vote. Her closest competitor was Democrat Candy Christophe, who received nearly 30-percent of the vote.
Julia Letlow will head to Washington D.C. and do the job her late husband was elected to do last December. But Luke Letlow died days before he was to be sworn after batting the coronavirus. Julia Letlow told KNOE-TV it’s been an emotional four months.
“I know he’s smiling down tonight with pride,” said Letlow.
In further comments to KNOE, she said her time on the campaign trail has helped her process the tragedy.
“Any time you can get outside of yourself and serve other people, that aids in the grieving process so that has been cathartic for me,” said Letlow.
Letlow becomes the first female Republican to represent Louisiana in Congress. She said when she gets to Congress her first priority will be rural broadband.
“Nothing like a pandemic to bring to light that that has been a necessity for our people in the 5th District to educate their children and seek out healthcare. That is something I want to champion, especially with the infrastructure bill coming down,” said Letlow.
In the special election for the 2nd Congressional district, two state senators from New Orleans, Troy Carter and Karen Carter Peterson, will face each other in an all-Democrat runoff. That election is set for April 24th.
