LSU Board of Supervisors member Lee Mallett is calling for the university to cut ties with legal counsel Taylor Porter. He said their advice to a small group of university leaders to keep the board in the dark about the alleged sexual misconduct of former coach Les Miles, is the core of the school’s coverup.
“The only party left that was involved in that in my opinion is the attorneys and I think that that’s terrible advice to tell them not to report this to the board, the board should have been told about it,” said Mallett.
Mallett, the longest-serving board member, said while he can’t speak for the board during that period, he does believe if all members had been informed, that those involved would have been terminated.
Amid the scandal, Mallett feels the current board is being wrongly accused. He said they had no knowledge, but they are committed to correct the ongoing culture at LSU.
“We’re working on this diligently. Yesterday I spent the whole day at the capitol visiting with legislators, answering their questions, and trying to work as a team to correct this and I think, I think we’re going to be successful,” said Mallett.
Mallett said the board recognizes that it is now their responsibility to fix it. He said they are committed to doing so for the school and their family.
“I have nieces that I want to go to LSU, we all have family members that we want to go to LSU. I want to same for them as I would want for my own. And I promise you this board is engaged,” said Mallett.
The Baton Rouge law firm of Taylor Porter has represented the university for 80 years.
