Congresswoman Julia Letlow took the oath of office this morning, filling the fifth district seat that was left vacant after the unexpected death of her husband Luke Letlow in December. Julia Letlow is the first Republican woman to represent Louisiana in Congress.
“My district is blessed with some of the best resources in the nation, and no one knew that better than my husband Luke, who was elected to this very seat, but who we lost to COVID just days before he was set to take office,” said Letlow.
Letlow said she wants to assist farmers in the state, champion education, and assist with bringing broadband internet to the predominantly rural 5th district. She also wants to focus on recovery efforts with the pandemic.
“Too many families like mine have experienced tragedy because of this pandemic. To those families I see you, I hear you and most importantly I pray with you,” said Letlow.
Letlow said she wants to be part of a revival of honesty, integrity, and hard work in congress.
“I will stand up for what is right and true bringing hope of a better tomorrow for my children and for yours,” said Letlow.
Julia’s two children, Jeremiah, 3, and Jacqueline, 1, along with the other members of Louisiana’s Congressional delegation were present for the ceremony. A runoff to fill Louisiana’s 2nd congressional seat is set for April 24th.
