The first of three major SWEPCO wind projects is underway to deliver low-cost renewable energy for their customers in northwest and central Louisiana. SWEPCO spokesperson Carey Sullivan said this is the largest renewable energy project ever for a Louisiana utility and will impact 225,000 customers.
“And with these three wind projects they’ll save about a billion dollars over the 30-year expected life of these new facilities,” said Sullivan.
Sullivan said the projects are in north-central Oklahoma and the windmills are connected to the power grid, which will serve SWEPCO customers in Louisiana.
“These are enormous windmills, 72 wind turbines in the Sundance Facility, when the whole project is completed, we’ll have more than 500,” said Sullivan.
The windmills will contain the newest technology including a cold weather package which Sullivan said will ensure operation during the coldest parts of the year for the windmills.
The windmill project is part of SEWPCO’s parent company, American Electric Power’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions by 80-percent by 2030. Sullivan said they will also be adding more forms of low-cost renewable energy.
“We’ve also committed to adding up to 200 megawatts of solar generation in the future in Louisiana,” said Sullivan.
Sullivan said SWEPCO is committed to making the energy they provide as clean as possible, as quickly as possible, without compromising reliability, affordability, or the security of the electric power system.
