Louisiana Congressman-elect Troy Carter
New Orleans Senator Troy Carter defeated fellow Democrat Karen Carter Peterson in Saturday’s run-off to represent the state’s Second Congressional district. JMC Analytics Pollster John Couvillon says white voters were the key to Carter’s victory…
“Troy Carter for 65-percent of the white vote and once you got outside of New Orleans that 65-percent was above eighty percent,” said Couvillon.
Couvillon says even though it’s a predominately Democratic district Carter will have to pay some attention to the conservative vote in his district also when making decisions in DC.
“Even considering the fact that it’s a liberal district because their strong vote enabled him to win by as big of a margin as he did,” said Couvillon.
While the white voter wasn’t necessarily courted in the race, Couvillon says Carter did promote his ability to reach across the aisle and it might have been Peterson’s out-of-state ads describing her opponent as a Trump conservative that worked against instead of for her.
“I don’t think it got the Peterson campaign any more votes but it certainly sent a smoke signal to Republicans as to who the more preferred candidate was between the two,” said Couvillon.
Voter turnout for the runoff was 17-percent.
