Hall of Famer Kim Mulkey is back home as the Tickfaw native is the new head LSU women’s basketball coach. The 58-year-old Mulkey has an impressive resume. Three national championships as head coach at Baylor, two national titles as a player at La Tech, and a 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist. The voice of the Lady Tigers, Patrick Wright, says it’s a blockbuster hire.
“The biggest hire LSU has ever made in terms of a coach that comes in with the credentials of a hall farmer, multiple multiple championships an Olympian, you name it,” said Wright.
Wright says a hire of this magnitude will bring excitement to a women’s basketball program that has seen a sharp decline in attendance since its run of five straight Final Fours in the mid-2000s. He says Mulkey can make the Lady Tigers title contenders again.
“Our administrators recognize that it’s possible here, it’s something we are not getting right now, but it can happen with the right person and I can’t think of a better person who can come in here and try to recapture that,” said Wright.
Mulkey takes over a program that went 9-13 last season. Wright believes Mulkey can make LSU a winner quickly.
“With fan support that’s about to happen and the coach with the expertise in talent evaluation skills, I think within a couple of years LSU is going to be a very serious contender to be at the top again,” said Wright.
