A St. Parks woman, 22-year-old Chelsey Paige Wiltz, was arrested after her two-year-old son shot himself in the arm with an unsecured gun. St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s office Major Ginny Higgin says Wiltz initially skirted the truth about her child’s injury…
“It just came in that they didn’t know how it occurred. There haven’t been details released because of course, it is an ongoing investigation, but the initial information she gave was not in fact what happened.”
The child was treated of his injuries and released from the hospital the following day.
Higgins says if parents lack gun safety this can happen in any household…
“A lot of times people think because it is a small child that they can’t gain access to it or they won’t know how to use it. It just takes a situation such as this one for a child to be injured.”
Higgins says there are simple steps every family can take to prevent gun injuries…
“There are locked gun cases if you don’t have a locked gun case you keep it on a top shelf in a locked case. You can also buy the locks that actually fit through the weapon and goes through the slide.”
Authorities say Wiltz was charged with illegal use of weapons, illegal possession of narcotics, and obstruction of justice.
