Did you know that more pets go missing over the 4th of July than any other time of the year? Fireworks often scare pets leading them to run away. Louisiana SPCA Spokesperson Rebecca Melanson said having your pet tag along for a fireworks display is a bad idea.
“It might seem like a good idea at the time but they’re going to try to get out of whatever leash or harness you have them in, so you don’t want to bring them with you,” said Melanson.
But there are things you can do to keep them calm before the skies light up. Melanson said a tired dog is a calm dog.
“So, you want to bring them on that long walk, play a bunch of fetch, that way they’re not going to be as scared because they’re tired, they’re not able to be as scared,” said Melanson.
If you live near a fireworks display keep your pet inside and play white noise or music to calm your pet. Melanson said also make sure your pet is properly tagged.
“Today and tomorrow, you want to go get those ID tags updated if they’re not, because if they do get out if they have that ID tag they stray hold period, and this is statewide, is automatically extended for a week,” said Melanson.
Also, check that all gates are secure and patch any holes that your pet could possibly escape through, and never punish your pet during times of stress it will only make things worse.
