The National Retail Federation projects record back-to-school spending this year as students head back to class for fall.
NRF spokesperson Katherine Cullen said they’re expecting K-12 shoppers to spend about $850 on average, $60 more than last year, and college students and their families are expected to spend about $1,200 on average for the upcoming semester. That could result in 71 billion in total spending, up 2.3 billion from last year.
Cullen said back-to-school shoppers are expected to spend about $254 on average on clothes.
“As they are getting kids to move from the classroom in the home and the classroom in the bedroom to the classroom in a school environment we are finding there is actually a lot of excitement from kids for first-day-of-class clothes shopping,” said Cullen who added shoppers are also expected to spend about 300 dollars on average on electronics.
Cullen said after a slump last year it appears that families are returning to brick and mortar, but still half of shoppers are expected to order online.
