Most of the state is under a heat advisory today as Louisiana is dealing with its first lengthy heatwave of the summer. State Climatologist Barry Keim says a high-pressure system has settled in over the Gulf of Mexico, lowering rain chances and driving up the heat and humidity.
“Without the clouds, without the thunderstorms this allows the Louisiana landscape to bake in the blazing sun.”
Keim says there’s a heat advisory, because the real feel temperatures will soar past 100-degrees over the next few days.
“We can expect temperatures in the low to mid 90’s across south Louisiana this week with upper 90’s in north Louisiana, and then heat index values between 105 and 110 all across the state.”
Keim says it’s dangerous to spend a lot of time outdoors when the heat index hits 110-degrees….
“So what we need to do is be smart, stay hydrated, do outdoor activities in the morning if you possibly can, stay indoors and out of the sun in those afternoon hours.”
