High School football is just around the corner and fall practice will begin shortly. The rise in Coronavirus cases has many across the state wondering if the start of the season will be delayed. LHSAA Executive Director Eddie Bonine does not expect a delay because we know more about the virus now.
“We didn’t know who our opponent was, we had a name but we didn’t know what the opponents skill level was, now that we know what the skill set is, we know what the opponent is and we have an offense and a defense for it.”
Bonine also says he has confidence that coaches can keep the players safe because they had to work through the same thing last season.
“We have a defense against this and the ability to defend ourselves against this particular surge, and we just need to do what we need to do to participate and I think our coaches, and parents, and everyone out there will get done what they need to get done.”
Right now the LHSAA has not required vaccinations to be mandatory for student athletes and Bonine says that will be left up to the schools.
“Everybody should have the choice to do one or the other, I guess if we got into a position we could mandate it, we’re a voluntary organization, if you don’t want to take it and your school says you have to and you don’t want to then you don’t participate.”
