US Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra will be in New Orleans Friday to tour health facilities that are inundated with COVID patients amidst the 4th wave. Congressman Troy Carter will accompany him. Carter said he formally requested additional aid from the Biden Administration to help our beleaguered hospitals.
“We know that the Delta variant has taken a turn and we were hopeful that we were headed in the right direction but it looks like we have other issues,” said Carter. “We need resources and additional funding is always helpful.”
2,729 Louisianans are currently hospitalized with COVID, down from the 3,000 seen last week but still about 700 higher than at any point in the previous three waves.
Carter said they will be visiting Children’s Hospital with Governor Edwards and other State Department of Health staff. Becerra will visit a community health center in New Orleans East.
Becerra will also attend a roundtable with the Governor and Mayor to discuss vaccination efforts. Carter said Becerra’s presence should underscore the need to increase our vaccination rate.
“Anytime we have an opportunity to heighten awareness and bring attention certainly having the Secretary of HHS coming to the 2nd Congressional District is a big deal,” said Carter.
