Ochsner reports many of their facilities experienced roof damage as a result of Hurricane Ida’s strong winds. Ochsner Health President Warner Thomas said there was so much damage at their hospitals in Houma and Raceland that the patients at those locations have been taken elsewhere.
“Water intrusion, you know we’re talking about water coming through the roof, running down walls, coming through windows given the sustained wind. We had a few windows blow in,” Thomas said.
The emergency rooms at St. Anne Hospital in Raceland and Chabert Medical Center in Houma remain open. A total of 65 patients were transferred.
Thomas said Ida’s destruction has not stopped them from providing quality care to their patients.
“A couple of transplants on Sunday going into Monday or maybe on Saturday going to Sunday. We did several surgeries yesterday that were emergent we’ll do surgeries today that were emergent,” Thomas said.
Some areas of southeast Louisiana could be without water for days and electricity for weeks. But Thomas said they prepare for these difficult situations.
“Water trucks were staged at various places, fuel and generators were staged at various places outside of harm’s way. We have electricians and various contactors on location and on standby ready to go,” Thomas said.
