Hurricane Ida has left New Orleans powerless, but the worst-case scenario has been avoided because the levees held preventing another Katrina-like flood event. Mayor LaToya Cantrell says today is a day of assessment to determine what the actual impact of the storm is as city agencies make the rounds.
“They’re going block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, nobody will be left out, no one has been left out,” Cantrell said.
So far the city has noted collapsed buildings and fires but no extensive damages. Cantrell reports only one death directly caused by the storm.
“We do know it was a tragedy where we believe an individual was driving a car and therefore drowned. Again that information will become official through our coroner’s office. One is still too many,” Cantrell said.
New Orleans residents who have evacuated the city have been asked to remain where they are if they can.
The mayor says Entergy is working on the power and AT&T is trying to restore mobile service. Cantrell has called on businesses with generators to be good neighbors
“Share the power you have, open your businesses for the people to recharge their devices as well as meet their ongoing needs. That how we’re going to get through this, no doubt about it,” Cantrell said.
