The state may have to consider postponing the October 9th primary election, which includes three legislative seats, a mayoral election in New Orleans, and two Constitutional amendments. Governor John Bel Edwards met with Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin Tuesday about a plan for the October election due to Ida hardships.
“A lot of it has to do with the electricity being out, especially in these parishes where we’re not sure if it’s going to be back or not in time for early voting and so forth and the displaced population,” said Edwards.
The mail is another factor, mail service has yet to be restored for some areas. Edwards says they are basically looking at postponing the election by a month and that includes the deadlines for registration and early voting and dates after the primary for example any runoff election.
“But you’ll get an answer on that soon,” said Edwards.
In a statement from Ardoin, he said a number of local election officials and civic groups have expressed support for rescheduling the October 9 and November 13 elections.
