The field of contenders for the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican John Kennedy is expected to get a little more crowded in the near future. Lapolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford said there’s talk that Democrat Gary Chambers could announce his intentions soon.
“Kind of put himself on the political map in the pelican state during the second congressional district race this year,” Alford said.
Chambers nearly made the run-off in a Congressional race won by Troy Carter in April.
Political newcomer and commercial pilot, Luke Mixon of Baton Rouge, announced last week his decision to run against Kennedy next year.
While Mixon says he has political operatives working with him on his campaign, Alford said Chambers has some notable backing too.
“When I spoke to Gary Chambers he told me he had a donor base of about 15,000 individual voters that he can tap into. I think if he does run he will be able to raise a bit of money,” Alford said.
Alford doubts any big-name Republicans will announce a bid to unseat Kennedy next year.
“John Kennedy is not only a Republican brand that’s known from border to border in this state but he’s become a household name in political circles in DC,” Alford said.
Alford also added that Kennedy will undoubtedly have a sizeable war chest for his re-election bid, including eight million dollars in cash already on hand.
