A man is dead and three other men and a 14-year-old are hospitalized after an ambush-style shooting Tuesday night in front of a grocery store in St. Charles Parish. Sheriff Greg Champagne says the gunfire occurred in Killona and it hasn’t been confirmed how many shooters there were, or the motive. “We have been dealing with an interparish group of, I don’t know what the proper word would be…family, clan, gang, clicks of individuals…who are engaged in a cycle of violence,” said Champagne.
All of the victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The man killed is identified as 29-year-old Darzil Washington. The three wounded men who were taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans are identified as Darville Washington, Dwayne Williams, both critically injured, and Jayvon Lockett who is in stable condition. The teen was also shot multiple times. His name has not been released and he was last reported in stable condition.
Sheriff Champagne says they’ve been working with authorities in St. James and St. Johns parishes who have encountered similar types of criminal activity. He told reporters Wednesday afternoon they do have an idea who may be involved, but there’s a difference between having an idea that you can put in an arrest warrant and really bring those hoodlums, for lack of a better word, violent hoodlums to justice.”
Upset that a teen was caught up in the gunfire, the sheriff is asking people to come forward who may have information on this crime or others like it. “There are people out there who know something. They know who did it. They know where the weapons are. Make the call. Call CrimeStoppers. Identify somebody before it’s your child that gets shot,” implored Sheriff Champagne.
