It’s Apprenticeship Appreciation and Awareness Week and Louisiana Workforce Commission spokesperson Chris Fiore said they are celebrating by offering an apprenticeship fair today connecting job seekers with opportunities, and a virtual fair for students….
“There’s also an Urban League Event happening on the 19th from 9 AM to noon and we’re doing some other events, all of that can be found on our Facebook page,” said Fiore.
Apprenticeship programs allow students to learn on-the-job skills, earn a wage, and also earn education credits. Fiore said the program is a perfect opportunity for Louisianans who are interested in transitioning from one career to another.
“They literally are able to get paid, while they’re getting trained and over the course of their careers, they’re able to make more money in the long run. That’s good news for the people who are in the program, it’s good news for the State of Louisiana,” said Fiore.
The apprenticeship program encompasses a variety of occupations, for example, plumbers, electricians, and one that’s especially in demand now healthcare. Fiore said they are also holding a special event at the end of the month dedicated to healthcare apprenticeships.
LWC said on average those who complete an apprenticeship earn an annual salary of $50,000 and for every dollar employers spend they get an average of $1.47 back in increased productivity.
“So, we know across the country we’re facing a crisis in the healthcare industry as it relates to finding people, to be able to do those jobs,” said Fiore.
