The 100th Louisiana State Police cadet class starts this Sunday. LSP Superintendent Colonel Lamar Davis says this academy comes at a good time, as they are about 200 troopers shy of ideal manpower.
“We now will have 64 men and women to assimilate into the Louisiana State Police family, the DPS family, and our communities to further serve the mission of public safety,” said Davis.
Davis the cadet class includes 10 females and reflects cultural diversity as well.
“Our society has become more diverse, has become less monolithic and more diverse, as we look at that, we definitely want to emulate our society and the way I see it that is value-added,” said Davis.
Col. Davis acknowledges problems State Police have had in recent years with the use of force in roadside encounters; especially with persons of color.
He says a number of troopers have been fired in recent years for said behavior. But points out the use of force accounts for less than one percent of all roadside encounters and assistance.
He says the new class of well-trained troopers will improve public safety.
