A Lake Charles man and woman are arrested after detectives discovered $1 million worth of illegal narcotics in their possession. Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said the combined anti-drug task force arrested 43-year-old Caleb Barfield and 30-year-old Kimberly Breaux last week.
“Barfield has several convictions for drugs arrests, felony convictions narcotics arrests, and I believe she has somewhat of a criminal history too. There was a juvenile in the house at the time, so they were arrested for that also,” said Mancuso.
Among the drugs seized were 170 grams of the synthetic opioid fentanyl, Lake Charles Police Chief Shawn Caldwell explains what a lethal dose of fentanyl is.
“For all of us in south Louisiana, a grain of rice is about 21 milligrams. So, if you cut that grain of rice seven times you can kill seven people with a grain of rice worth of fentanyl,” said Caldwell.
With the seizure of such a large amount of illegal drugs, both Mancuso and Caldwell credit the task force with saving numerous lives. Caldwell said the number of drug overdose deaths has doubled in the parish.
“In Calcasieu Parish for the year 2021 we had one-hundred ODs, people who died from an overdose and that’s compared to 52 the year before. It’s alarming the amount of people who are overdosing,” said Caldwell.
The two face a plethora of drug charges including intent to sell, possession of illegal firearms, and in the presence of a juvenile. Barfield’s bond was set at $803-thousand and Breaux’s at $59-thousand. She was released on bond Friday.
