Roland Greene
House Speaker Clay Schexnayder has created a special legislative committee to look into the death of Ronald Greene. a Black man who died in 2019 after he was beaten by State Troopers following a high-speed chase that ended in Union Parish. There are accusations of a cover-up and allegations the governor was involved. Houma Representative Tanner Magee will serve as the committee’s chairman.
“It is not my intention to do a witch hunt or anything like that, but to find real answers and you can tell that by the committee break-up, you got four Republicans and four Democrats,” said Magee.
Governor John Bel Edwards says he made no attempt to impede or interfere with any investigation into Greene’s death. He says any allegation to the contrary is not true.
Schexnayder says the Legislature’s investigation will review the handling of the Greene incident on all levels. He says the truth must come out and no cover-up will be tolerated. Magee hopes to bring some closure to Greene’s family.
“Getting a sense of what did everybody know and when did they know is really the importance of this committee,” said Magee.
Edwards says he welcomes legislative oversight and agrees transparency is necessary in this investigation. Magee promises a fair investigation.
“I do not want the governor of Louisiana being involved in any wrongdoing, regardless of party or regardless anything, but I will do my duty and my obligation to investigate to this end and if that’s the direction it goes then that’s the direction we are going to investigate,” said Magee.
The select committee plans to hold its first hearing shortly after the conclusion of the redistricting session, which is set to end on February 20th. Invited witnesses will be announced soon.
