Rep Paul Hollis (R) - Covington
Covington Representative Paul Hollis wants to outlaw citations issued by traffic cameras in Louisiana. Hollis said the only studies that show cameras impact traffic safety are by the companies that operate them and keep a large portion of the fees they collect.
“There’s no other fine that I’m aware of where private companies get to siphon off a big chunk of that money, and by the way, none of those companies are in Louisiana, you know if that doesn’t make people angry I don’t know what does,” said Hollis.
Hollis has filed two bills for the session that begins next week to eliminate traffic cameras. One is House Bill 85 which if passed would allow the matter to be voted on by constitutional amendment in Louisiana and Hollis believes it would pass by a huge margin.
“Anything that you have in government where 70% are of the people are opposed to it, why shouldn’t it be gone. Why shouldn’t it be delegated to the dustbin,” said Hollis.
The other is House Bill 181 which would prohibit the splitting of profits, fees, and commissions of traffic fines from a private entity or company. Hollis said the traffic cameras are a money grab by municipalities and with the economy so dire their use needs to stop.
“I’m not shy about saying I think they’re a scam. Nothing more than a scam and it’s like this is where we need to start chipping away at big government,” said Hollis.
The session begins on Monday.
