Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an emotional plea to the United States Congress Wednesday that his country needs more assistance from America to help fend off Russia’s assault on his nation. Louisiana Senator John Kennedy says the U.S. wants to help.
“I think President Zelensky has managed not only to unite the West but to a large extent he’s managed to unite the Congress,” said Kennedy. “As one commentator put it an icon of liberty and guts.”
Zelensky spoke to federal lawmakers via video from his office in Kyiv. Kennedy says Zelensky made it clear he’s not asking for American troops, but military aid to combat Russian warplanes.
“He’s asking for help in terms of winning the war in the air and whether he needs surface air missiles or planes, we should provide them to him,” said Kennedy.
After Zelensky spoke to Congress, President Biden announced plans to send an additional 800-million dollars in military aid to Ukraine. Kennedy says in an ironic twist it’s Russia who established the precedence when it comes to providing another country with anti-aircraft systems.
“During the Vietnam War, Russia was not reluctant to provide planes to North Korea, they didn’t go through a third party or fourth party, they said here they area,” said Kennedy.
Kennedy says during the Korean War Russia also provided military aircraft to North Korea.
