After missing out on targets like Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson, the Saints have reunited with Jameis Winston, reportedly signing the 28-year-old to a a two-year, $28-million contract with the quarterback. WWL-TV Saints reporter Ralph Malbrough likes the deal.
“Jameis has done everything the Saints have asked of him, he’s been a great teammate, people rally around him and to me there was no other solution,” said Malbrough.
Winston started seven games for the Saints last season and New Orleans went 5-2 in those starts. Winston’s season ended when he tore ACL on October 31st in a win against the Buccaneers.
New Orleans was reportedly very interested in trading for Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson, but the Texans traded Watson to Cleveland instead.
Malbrough says now that the Saints have Winston wrapped up on an economically contract, they can address other areas of the roster.
“They got to figure out how to plug these holes, but the good news is with the extra cap space it gives them more flexibility to be aggressive with a guy in a one-year deal, where before they didn’t have any cap space and they couldn’t be aggressive,'” said Malbrough.
