A statewide poll looking ahead to the next governor’s race shows it’s wide open. Pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics asked 600 likely voters last week who they would vote for in 2023 among eight different potential candidates and Republican Senator John Kennedy received the most support at 22%.
“I think it also helps Senator Kennedy to that out of the three statewide elected officials I polled their favorable/unfavorable name recognition, his was the best by far of fall three,” said Couvillon.
Couvillon says according to his survey Kennedy’s approval rating is at 53%, but Cassidy’s is just 38%, which hurts his chances to become the next governor.
“So that’s something that he would have to work on between now and next summer’s qualifying time if he indeed were to run,” said Couvillon.
10-percent of the respondents questioned said they would vote for Cassidy in the 2023 governor’s race. Eleven percent say they support Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry and seven-percent back GOP Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser.
Couvillon says 14-percent of his respondents said they would support Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome, who is well-liked by Democrats in Baton Rouge.
“And then the question would become to what extent can she unite Democratic voter bases in other cities to build on that,” said Couvillon.
Broome has given no indication she plans to run for governor.
State Senator Gary Smith received four percent of the vote in this poll. Fellow GOP Senator Sharon Hewitt got 2-percent, State Treasurer John Schroder one percent. 29-percent are undecided.
