For those that have the desire to help others following natural disasters, Cajun Navy Relief will host the second annual Search and Rescue Games Saturday in Westlake. The event will feature hands-on training including mock rescues, dispatch simulation, and boater response in an effort to train volunteers for real scenarios.
“To do technical rescues normally requires a lot of certificates and special training. We have guys with that, that are going to help this process so we can give exposure to boaters,” said Cajun Navy Relief President Shawn Boudreaux.
Boudreaux said this time of year is the organization’s offseason, so it’s a great time to recruit those interested in disaster relief.
“We have an opportunity to work through logistics, planning, and finance. It’s just running the whole event and spontaneous volunteers can start to plug in now and find out how to work with us during a disaster,” said Boudreaux.
Boudreaux said participants will be divided into three divisions in an effort to not only train, but to compete for prizes.
“The objective is to encourage team place in the division, but competition between divisions. So there will be overall prizes for individuals, but division-wide prizes as well,” said Boudreaux.
