Sen John Kennedy (R)
This year’s U-S Senate race still has time to heat up, but right now Republican John Kennedy is a clear favorite to retain his seat as 53-percent of voters plan to vote for the state’s junior U-S Senator this fall. JMC Analytics pollster John Couvillon says Kennedy may not need a runoff to win.
“He is sitting above the 50% mark, and I figure that number can go even higher, when you factor in favorable undecideds, so I see that as a 55-to-60% race that could be settled in November,” said Couvillon.
Democratic challengers Gary Chambers and Luke Mixon are getting 14 and seven percent of the vote respectively based on this JMC Analytics poll.
“I see Gary Chambers as being the much more dominant player, especially since he has a more forceful message and a more solid base than Mixon does,” said Couvillon.
Even though 23 percent of those polled are still undecided, Couvillon says Kennedy has everything he needs to coast into re-election.
“Kennedy already has a solidly Republican voter base adding to the fact this will be a strong Republican mid-term year,” said Couvillon.
Qualifying for the election is in July. November is the primary and if a run-off is needed, it will take place in December.
